Exploring the Art of Creating Personalised Scatter Cushions: A Journey of Creativity and Self-Expression

Updated: Oct 25

I believe in celebrating the creativity of others, and I deeply appreciate the skill and artistry that goes into creating each one of these cushions. Each piece tells a story, and that’s what makes it truly special.

This is the story of Marise Rothman (verstrooid_kussings) https://www.instagram.com/verstrooid_kussings/

"My journey into making unique scatter cushions began with a simple desire to create something of my own—something personal and meaningful, made by my hands, that I could admire and share with others. But at the time, I wasn’t sure what form this creation would take.

As a young girl, I was the proud owner of my grandmother's sewing machine and sewing basket. I remember hemming my own pants, turning old jeans into skirts, and adding sequins to tops to give them new life. When I started working at Hertex, I began making my own pillowcases, and it was there that my love for beautiful fabrics truly blossomed.

Over time, I learned a great deal about myself and the décor industry. I also noticed what was missing in the market: unique and distinctive scatter cushions. Cushions are a major decorative element in any space, but I found that they had become mass-produced, with everyone choosing from the same options. I strongly believe in individualism, and I see a home as a reflection of one’s uniqueness and personality. I wanted to contribute something different to that vision.

Initially, my idea was to make cushions with interesting finishes like tassels and fringes, paired with unique fabrics. But when I asked myself whether this was truly something someone else couldn’t do, the answer was no. So, I pushed myself further. One day, while playing around with a scrap of fabric, I embroidered it with beads, and the answer clicked into place. Sometimes, the solutions are right in front of us—we just need to use what we already have.

Today, all my handwork is done in the spare room of our home in Paarl, and I’m excited to start building stock for an online shop. Each of my scatter cushions is truly unique, with every bead sewn on by hand. The time and love invested in each one make them special, and the best part for me is sending a cushion off, knowing the recipient has something that no one else in the world owns. Even if I recreate a design, no two cushions will ever be the same—that’s the essence of art."
