Reviving a Retro Desk: A Modern Twist on a Classic
Thank you to my friend, Suné for sharing her story with us.
One of her favourite projects was refurbishing an old retro desk that had long been forgotten. It was a bit rough around the edges, with dents and scratches that told the story of its past. But with patience and the right techniques, she was able to give it a second life.
Restoring Beauty and Purpose to a Forgotten Piece
She started by filling in the gaps and dents with high-quality wood filler, ensuring the desk had a smooth, solid foundation. Once everything was dried and set, she sanded it down, getting rid of any remaining imperfections.
For the finish, she chose a deep, rich wood stain that honoured the desk’s vintage roots while giving it a modern update. Several coats later, it had a beautiful, polished look, which she sealed to protect against future wear and tear.
The result? A stunning, one-of-a-kind desk that brings both nostalgia and style to her workspace. It’s a piece that reminds me of the power of restoration—how we can preserve history while adapting it to fit our modern needs.
From Vintage Speaker Boxes to Functional Furniture
Bringing Retro Charm Into Your Living Space
She stumbled upon a set of old, unused speaker boxes and saw beyond their intended purpose and envisioned them as stylish, multifunctional furniture pieces. With a bit of creativity she transformed these vintage treasures into coffee tables and bookshelves that add both charm and practicality to her living room.
To start, she reinforced the structure of each box, ensuring they would be sturdy enough for daily use. Adding four wooden legs to each gave them a fresh, modern stance. After sanding the surfaces smooth, she painted them in soft, neutral tones that blend effortlessly with her contemporary décor.
The interiors became perfect little spaces to display books, trinkets, and decorative items.
What was once a pair of outdated speaker boxes now shines as retro-chic furniture with a story to tell—proof that with a little vision, you can turn anything into something beautiful and functional.
