Creating Harmony at Home: Inspiration from a Friend
Recently I received some wonderful inspiration from a friend and I want to share her approach to making her house feel like a home. It’s a simple, thoughtful way of curating space that resonates deeply with my own desire to create balance and calm in my living areas.
Her guiding principle? Keep it clutter-free, yet personal. She prefers a home that feels open and serene, so rather than filling every available surface, she uses a few carefully selected spots to display personal and sentimental items. A shelf, for instance, is perfect for grouping meaningful objects—whether they’re family photos, cherished mementos, or a favourite piece of art. By containing these items to one area, it prevents visual clutter from spreading throughout the room and gives the eye a place to rest.
I’ve found this to be such a helpful reminder. When there’s clutter everywhere, it can feel overwhelming, and your home might not feel like the peaceful retreat it should be. Instead, I’ve adopted her strategy of creating harmony by choosing focal points—places that naturally draw the eye—and surrounding them with quieter, less busy areas. This balance allows the beauty of each piece to stand out while maintaining a sense of calm.
One of my favourite examples of her approach is an antique armchair that she had reupholstered. It has a fresh, modern fabric now, but its classic shape and history give it an added layer of character. Another piece that really shines is her grandmother’s antique dresser. Originally part of a bedroom set, she removed the mirror and now uses it as a statement piece in her living room, where it fits seamlessly with the space’s more contemporary elements. She also transformed an old lounge chair by giving it a new lease on life with reupholstery, blending comfort and style effortlessly.
To add texture and warmth, she incorporates natural elements like plants with different leaf shapes, wooden accents, and even crystals. These items not only bring in a variety of textures but also help connect the indoors with the outside world, making the space feel more inviting and grounded.
Her approach is a wonderful blend of style and mindfulness, reminding me that it’s not just about how a space looks, but also how it makes you feel. A thoughtfully designed home is one where every piece has its place and purpose, and where tranquility and beauty work hand in hand. Thank you Karin for sharing with us.
